About Me

We love to travel and find new things to do together as a family. This blog shares our thoughts about the places we explore, mainly in the Metropolitan DC area (Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, sometimes referenced at the DMV). And, occasionally we will write about places we visit on our vacations. Sometimes you just wish someone had told you "Don't waste your time or money" before you went somewhere, or sometimes you're going on vacation and want some insight on family-friendly things to do. We hope this blog will come in handy for you and your family. If you have suggestions for places to visit, please share them with us. Happy reading!

Monster Mini Golf

My husband developed a love for putt-putt golf on our visit to Myrtle Beach, SC earlier this year (http://familyfunseekers.blogspot.com/2013/04/myrtle-beach-sc.html), but unfortunately there are not many mini-golf places around locally. There's one at AdventurePark USA in New Market (http://familyfunseekers.blogspot.com/2012/09/adventure-park-usa.html) and one at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg (http://familyfunseekers.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-water-park-at-bohrer-park.html) and maybe one or two more but they're kinda lame when you compare them to some of the fancy ones we see in otther places. When I think of putt-putt, I think of waterfalls and characters and grand landscapes but I have yet to see that here.

I came across Monster Mini Golf and saw that there is a new location opening up in Rockville but an existing location in Jessup/Columbia. That's about a 40 minute drive for us but it was a rainy day so we decided to check it out for something to do indoors. I knew it was inside but I don't know why I still expected something grandiose. When we walked in, it was all dark and everything was glow-in-the-dark.  The tiny little place had an arcade, and the golf area had really cool glowing graphics and monster props. At first glance at the putt-putt area, we all kinda looked at each other like "we drove all the way up here for this?" The area was completely flat, compact, and didn't look like much of a challenge at all, and to top it off there was a wait-list to play so we were kinda forced into playing the arcade games while we waited. Once we started playing, although the entire course is flat, some of the holes did pose a challenge and we all had a good time playing. In fact, we didn't zip through it as fast as we thought we would. The DJ played some pretty good music from the 70's and 80's and gave away prize tickets to people he called at random (like somebody with flip-flops, or braces, or out of state driver's license, etc).

I can't say that I would make that drive up there again but if it's local for you, it's not a bad way to spend a couple hours. I think the price is a little high ($9 adults/$8 kids) but I'll wait for the new location to open up and then reconsider going again.   http://www.monsterminigolf.com/fran-md-columbia/index.html

If you know of any cool putt-putt places in the DMV area, please let me know!
